Reading Focus: Non Narrative Text Features
This week we continued to learn about the non- narrative text features. The children completed a flip -book that they were asked to identify the features. They will continue to work on it throughout the week. We are learning how to use the features to help us as readers.
Grammar Focus: This week we learned about nouns and proper nouns. The children enjoyed playing headbands to identify nouns by asking questions and proper nouns.
Sight Words of the Week :once, every, put. Please be sure to return Word Study notebooks on Friday.
Writing Focus: We are continuing to learn about the Six Traits of writing. Children are continuing to write narrative stories during Writer’s Workshop. We focus on the traits during our mini-lessons and what we can do to make our writing better. We will also begin to learn about friendly letters as our school post office has opened.
Math: We are nearing the end of unit one. We will take an assessment early next week. I will share results with you at conferences.
Science: We started our unit on Force and Motion. We are learning about pushes and pulls, gravity, friction and magnets. This week I had the students learn about the scientific process. They leaned that scientists ask questions, make a hypothesis, complete experiments and collect data. We built houses from a variety of materials and they made a hypothesis as to what house could remain standing with the force of the,”Big Bad Hair Dryer.” We collected the data and formed our conclusions. We also added a friction piece to see if it would have an effect on the house standing. We talked about how friction can slow us down. We will focus on Matter next week and conclude the month with Energy.
