Students were given a bag of legos, a partner, and a challenge opportunity. Each opportunity asked the students to build an item. Some of the challenges included: Build an item that flies, a ship, a new castle for Cinderella, an item that covers the rectangle completely without touching the edges, the numbers 1 through 9, and many others. I got to see their creativity, problem solving, and cooperative learning abilities. Most importantly, the students had a blast!
Today we partnered up with a friend and scooted around the room to answer questions about items that we know about and items that come in pairs. Then, we enjoyed trying to save Sammy, the gummy worm and get him back in the boat. Students worked together to problem solve about how to get Sammy into a life jacket (life-saver) without touching him. They were only given paper clips and a cup. I wanted to see how they would work together to solve this problem. Fortunately, Sammy was saved by many groups! Unfortunately, many groups ate Sammy when finished! Enjoy the pictures.
We had a great 1st day of second grade! We started the day with a Welcome back assembly, participated in a "Find a Friend" activity and enjoyed the book, First Day Jitters. We learned about the different feelings friends had before starting school. However, all of our jitters disappeared when we tried out jitter juice! ( Sprite and sherbet) We practiced our fluency skills reading the poem, Jitters.
In the afternoon we reviewed classroom expectations and read the book, How Full is Your Bucket? I can see I'm going to have many bucket fillers this year! Finally, we packed up our folders and headed out the door to Library and P.E. What a great 1st day! Enjoy the pictures! 2nd Grade Homework
