Reading Focus: Predicting
I am modeling how good readers make predictions and enhance their predictions as they read. We are discussing the story elements and how the events in a story change throughout the story. We are also looking at the Character traits and how they support us in making predictions. Your chlld will bring home their prediction packet that we completed together.
Grammar Focus: Sentences This week we focused on the simple subject and simple predicate of the sentence. Our focus will continue to look at complete sentences.
Sight Words of the Week: of, one, said. Students will need to spell the words correctly in all work.
Writing Focus: We are continuing to learn about the Six Traits of writing. Children are continuing to write narrative stories during Writer’s Workshop. We focus on the traits during our mini-lessons and what we can do to make our writing better.
Math: This week we focused on strategies we can use to add more than 2 addends. It was a great way to reinforce the making ten strategy, doubles, doubles plu 1 or 2 and minus 1 or 2 and zero property, we are also learning about the vocabulary we see in word problems. We are working on labeling pictures and drawing a picture to support our efforts. We have also started a Beat the Clock series. We are working on having instant recall of our math facts.
Social Studies
We are learning about what makes up a community. We have learned that every community includes 4 components: A place to live, work, play and solve problems. We also learned about the three types of communities. Ask your child if they can tell you about an Urban, Suburban or Rural community. The students have planned their communities and are working in small groups to build their communities. We will discuss placement of places to work and play.
