Today we completed a group problem solving activity. Children were told a story about a worm named Sammy. Sammy was out on his boat when it capsized. Sammy is going to drown if he doesn't get his life jacket on. Students are given a cup which represents the boat, 4 paperclips (oars) and a gummy worm and life saver gummy. Their job was to get Sammy in his life saver vest without touching him with their hands. They needed to brainstorm ways to save him. They had a great time problem solving and fortunately Sammy was saved!
Today we celebrated our 2nd day of second grade! We focused on the number 2 and played a 2nd grade scoot game. We worked in pairs as we scooted around the room. Question cards focused on the number 2. Some questions included: Writing number sentences with a sum or difference of 2, finding 2 books they want to read, 2 goals they have, etc. We also started graphing information about our class. We discovered we have 11 boys and 11 girls.
We had a great first day of school! We enjoyed an all school assembly and met our new mascot, Buddy the bulldog. We learned that our old mascot is retiring and introduced us to the new pup. Then, we returned to the classroom and played a few getting to know you games. We also read the book, First Day Jitters and talked about our feelings. We sent the jitters away as we enjoyed special jitter juice.
