Today students enjoyed playing Word Bump during Daily Five. It is a word work game that helps to reinforce their weekly word patterns.

We played a version of the popular game of 7-up. The pickers today each held one of our vocabulary words. After children were selected, students stood up when picked. Rather than calling out the name of the child who selected them, students gave a definition for the vocabulary word. If they picked the right word, they would become the new picker. It was a fun way to practice our new vocabulary.
Thank you to the generous families at Butterfield School! Many local organizations are thankful for our support!
Students worked in cooperative groups to plan, design and build a community. They learned about the components of a community first. They are
: * A place where people live, work, play and solve problems. Then, they learned about the types off communities. They decided together if they were going to build an urban, suburban or rural community. Last, they constructed their buildings and mad a plan. *This week we focused on making Connections to our story of the week, The Invisible Boy. We learned about the 3 types of connections that can be made and how they help us as readers. We learned about :Text to Self, Text to Text, Text to World. We also discussed the importance of making deep connections.
*We also learned about complete sentences. We learned that we need a subject and an action. (subject and predicate) The students enjoyed finding the complete sentences while playing a game of basketball. They scored when they could identify a complete sentence and they missed the shot when they could not. We also discussed that a sentence needs a capital letter and ending punctuation. We will continue to work on these important skills. * We enjoyed our first read aloud chapter book, Horrible Harry in Room 2B. We made connections to friends we may know that are like Harry or like Doug. We also completed a directed drawing of Harry and decided if we would like a friend like Harry. * We also started our first Social Studies unit on Communities. * In math we are reviewing math mountains and the strategies we use when we add 2 numbers. I will be sharing log in information next week for our class Xtramath.org account. Please look for it to come home by Sept. 9. |
