I enjoyed meeting with you last week to share your child’s strengths and goals for the remainder of the year. We have continued to focus on summarizing informational text. The students are making progress in identifying the important parts of a paragraph and multi paragraph texts. Summarizing helps them to look for key information as they are writing a research paper about their animals. We will continue to practice this important skill and will also begin to look at making images as our next comprehension strategy.
Grammar: This week we focused on writing more detailed sentences by adding conjunctions and adjectives to our writing. We also played a scoot game and students were asked to pick the conjunction that made sense in their sentence.
Writing Focus: We have completed a great deal of research and many of us are writing the rough draft of our research report. We are focusing on starting sentences in different ways and looking for powerful words to make our writing stand out. We are also addressing conventions. I have been very busy reading and helping students edit their work. Our wonderful writing moms are also working with us individually to edit our work. Our goal is to have the writing completed by the end of next week so we can finish up the conclusion as well as an index and glossary. We are trying to incorporate as text features as well.
Math: We are working on a new strategy called adding up. Students are given story problems and asked to add up using mental math strategies to find an answer. We have been doing a great deal of counting by 10’s and 1’s starting at any given number to practice this skill. It will be another strategy that students will be able to use to support their math skills. We are also working on fact fluency. The students love around the World with facts. Please
Science: We are beginning to learn about characteristics that make an animal a reptile or mammal . We are also looking the food chain and how animals eat smaller animals. We will continue our studies and learn about animal adaptations.
Looking Ahead:
March 1 BFA Pasta Day
March 4 PBS Celebration Day
March 4th Career Day
March 4th Early Release Day
March 7 High Touch-High Tech Science Animal Adaptations
March 8 Sub Day
March 9 Report Cards
